In an effort to turn job losses into an opportunity for collective enterprise, former employees of Kochi-based Coro Health are planning to launch a healthcare IT and medical coding venture under the cooperative model.

The proposed Health Care IT & Revenue Cycle Co-operative Society has applied for registration as a primary cooperative society and approached the Cooperation Department seeking support to expedite the process.

The promoters recently met Keralam Cooperation Minister M M Liju and submitted a project report outlining the proposed venture.

More than 800 professionals reportedly lost their jobs following the closure of Coro Health earlier this year, leaving many struggling to find alternative employment.

The initiative took shape after Jijy Philip, founder and CEO of Kochi-based cooperative consultancy UACC, held discussions with affected employees and other stakeholders to explore a sustainable alternative to temporary relief measures.

Professionals from across Kerala subsequently participated in an online meeting to discuss the proposal, with several expressing interest in joining the initiative. Twenty-six professionals have already signed up as founding members, while preliminary discussions are under way to secure subcontracting assignments in healthcare IT and revenue cycle management.

The proposed cooperative aims to establish a technology enterprise owned and managed by the professionals working in it. Members will collectively own the organisation, undertake technology and service assignments, and generate employment opportunities through their shared enterprise.

The initiative seeks to extend the cooperative movement beyond its conventional areas of credit and thrift, applying the principles of collective ownership and democratic management to emerging sectors such as healthcare IT, medical coding, medical billing and revenue cycle management.

The promoters draw inspiration from the history of the Indian Coffee House, which stands as a prominent example of workers successfully sustaining an enterprise through collective ownership.

The promoters hope the proposed society will mark the beginning of a similar experiment in the technology and healthcare services sector.
